The Met Philadelphia – Alive and Kicking

This past Monday marked the opening of The Met Philadelphia at 858 N Broad St. The building has a long history that, unbelievably, almost ended with the structure being demolished. Thanks to the efforts of the Holy Ghost Church to stabilize the building during its occupancy from 1995 to 2012, and a $56 Million dollar renovation in partnership with developer Eric Blumenfeld, supported by a long-term Live Nation lease, the venue has been revitalized and the beautiful architectural details of the building have been restored. 

Initially called the Philadelphia Opera House, it was built in 1908 by theater impresario Oscar Hammerstein I. In 1910 Hammerstein sold it to the Metropolitan Opera of New York City, at which point it was renamed The Metropolitan Opera House. Throughout the decades that followed, the building’s tenants and use varied, from movie theater to sports venue, to use as a church. Years of decay and damage eventually rendered the space useless and near demolition. Thankfully investors saw the potential and stepped in, and the building will now flourish as an elegant and state-of-the-art entertainment venue for many more years to come.
