NLNA 40th Anniversary
The neighborhood of Northern Liberties has been a hotbed of activity for years, and it continues to accelerate. This past April, Realtor.com ranked it the 23rd fastest growing community in the U.S.
Among all the changing faces, one organization has been there through it all, the Northern Liberties Neighborhood Association. The NLNA is a wonderful mix of residents who’ve been in the neighborhood for decades, as well as those newly settled. They all have the same goals in common, that through all the changes their neighborhood will face, Northern Liberties will continue to openly discuss neighborhood improvements, neighborhood safety, and keeping the streets and parks clean and beautiful.
This week the NLNA celebrated their 40th anniversary with a special ground breaking event, and I was fortunate enough to attend. In addition to a birthday cake, there was a ceremony to unveil the new plans for a community pavilion and gathering space that will be built using funds awarded to them by Penn Treaty Special Services District.
The space was designed, on a pro bono basis, by architects Kieran Timberlake, as well as landscape designers, engineers, consultants and lawyers, who have all worked with the NLNA in the past. In addition, Michael Garden group client Callahan Ward will be donating both funds and construction management expertise to the project. Among the Who’s Who that were there to break ground, were Congressman Bob Brady, Council President Darrell Clarke, Councilman Mark Squilla, City Managing Director Mike DiBerardinis, and Former Councilman Frank DiCicco.
However, with communication and understanding, we can face the future without forgetting our ideals of the past. I look forward to seeing the neighborhood continue to unfold, and I’m sure the NLNA will be there to help insure that the future continues to be bright.
